This bay Oldenburg stallion pretends to be a "macho" in the ring but deep down he's a very sensitive soul – like men often are ... "Gusti" just loves to cuddle – especially when he's lying down in the straw. But his stable mascots don't have anything to laugh about. We hung up a stuffed dragon in his stable and the first thing he did was to pull off its wings.

August der Starke, who was taken into the sport program sponsored by the Oldenburg Verband in 2007 and has the "OLD" suffix, was the most expensive horse ever at one of the Elite auctions in the spring of 1999 in Vechta and we took him home to Schloss Achleiten.

He easily won his stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf with a total index of 140.18, also winning the dressage index with 141.64 and doing a good job in jumping with an index of 120.45 which put him on fifth place.

After that he won a series of tests for young dressage horses from novice (A) to medium (M) level with scores above 9.0. Under the careful guidance of my father, Hans Max-Theurer, he proved to be a most receptive pupil and in 2003 when he made his debut in advanced level, he won six tests in a row. In 2005 he easily made it to Grand Prix level and even qualified for the European Championships in international competitions.

August der Starke, by the way, is the sire of four of our horses: When bred to Weinrubina, the result was Augustin OLD, my Burg Pokal winner, and his full sister St.Pr.A. Augustina, who is one of our broodmares. Rubiette was also bred to August der Starke and produced another highly talented youngster, Antigua MT OLD.

  • The name August der Starke OLD [August the Strong] fits him perfectly.
  • Whether in daily training at home in Achleiten ...
  • ... or at the CHIO in Aachen/GER - he is simply an eye catcher!
  • This portrait of him is by the artist, Heike Landherr.
  • August der Starke OLD at the CDI Achleiten
  • He is the only one of our horses who doesn’t have a braided forelock.
  • His willingness to be collected is enormous ...
  • ... but he’s also a macho through and through ...
  • ... if he’s not just thinking about what life is supposed to mean.

His sire Argentinus passed on extremely versatile traits, just like the dam’s sire Landadel. His offspring that are successful on the course helped to rank Argentinus among the top ten of the world’s best jumper-makers (according to WBFSH). But his offspring in dressage were also among the best.

Along with August der Starke OLD, the dam Elinda also gave birth to a full brother named August der Dritte who is also licensed and  a daughter, St.Pr.St. Granulita (by Granulit), who is the dam of Comte (by Contendro I), a Celle State Stud sire who successfully competes in medium (M*) level show jumping.

The great great granddam, St.Pr.St. Palla (by Pokal), is the dam of two internationally successful Grand Prix horses, Flashdancer (by Freiherr) and Goldfinger (by Grundewald), both ridden by Anna Merveldt-Steffens from Ireland.

Other licensed stallions and successful sport horses also come from the Elfenröschen line.
